17 ways to spend your Valentine’s Day

I am a SUCKER for Valentine’s Day.

And I understand there’s a great chance that some of you reading this may hate it.

Wasn’t it always fun though to dress in red or pink on the holiday during elementary school, ready to play a game of BINGO using those (nasty) chalky heart candies? If you don't like Valentine's Day now, I can promise you that at some point you were at least a little excited for it.

What I love about Valentine’s Day is the energy that revolves around it. Taking a few hours to spend time with your family, friends or significant other is always enjoyable. Maybe you buy a small gift or sweet treat for them too. Or a gift or sweet treat for yourself. Overall, I would have to say that it’s a wonderful day to tell the people in your life that you care about them, and it’s an even better opportunity to spoil yourself, too. It doesn’t have to be lovey-dovey. There’s so much that you can do on Valentine’s Day that isn’t your typical romantic dinner or watching rom coms on repeat by yourself (these options are honestly great though).

Whether you’re single, married, in a relationship or won’t be seeing your SO on the 14th, here’s a random compilation of activities I’ve come up with that you could potentially use to occupy your time and help make your V-day a little extra special this year.

1. Make boujee pasta for dinner

Some options:

Pinterest has some great recipes if none of these are your jam.

2. Watch one ~or a few~ of the "25 Sweetest, Sappiest Movies" on Netflix

The 25 best movies for Valentine's Day, according to Cosmopolitan.

I'd recommend:

  • 17 Again with Zac Efron

  • Someone Great with Gina Rodriguez (I've seen this movie probably eight times. Never gets old.)

  • Silver Linings Playbook with Jennifer Lawrence

  • To All The Boys I've Loved Before (a classic since 2018)

  • Easy A with Emma Stone

  • When We First Met with Adam DeVine

3. Paint!!

You don't have to be good at painting to be able to paint. You're probably no Bob Ross but you can definitely wiggle around some paint brushes.

This seems easy enough.

4. Make your dream house on Sims

Like actually.

5. Buy flowers for yourself!

Or your friend, mom, dad, loved one, roommate, dog...

You deserve the flowers though. Treat yourself 🥰

I thought this article about Popular Flower Trends of 2021 was interesting and could spark some ~inspiration~

6. Jam to my Taylor Swift playlist on Spotify

From passion to heartbreak and everything in between, I'm not embarrassed to say that Taylor definitely has some bangers.

7. Drink strawberries and champagne

Could pair well with chocolate covered strawberries. Or have a full-on mimosa bar! That seems more appealing.

Both options seem very enjoyable and even glamorous -- looks like a great photo op to me. If you decide on strawberries and champagne though please let me know how it is because I've never tried it. :(

8. Write a Valentine to yourself

We all could use a little self-love. Write down what you love about yourself, what you're proud of yourself for accomplishing, or just give yourself a damn compliment.

9. Bake a fun V-day themed dessert

After you've made and inhaled a plate of pasta, of course.

(is your mouth watering yet)

10. Put on headphones, blast some music and jam out

This is kind of random, but whenever I'm feeling sluggish, bored or even in a bad mood, I'll play some tunes that I know will bring up my spirits and make me want to dance.

If you need a little more motivation to get up and do it, a study in the UK claims that dancing results in:

  • Increases in happiness 📈

  • Increases in confidence and social skills 🤝

  • Decreases in stress hormones and depression 📉

  • Expansion in mindfulness and self-awareness 🧠💡

11. Play Webkinz

Every once in a while I remember the game Pizza Palace exists and then I spend two hours trying to beat my high score.

You can't even make fun of me if you've never played it.

12. Begin your career as a wine connoisseur

Pop open a bottle and start chugging.

Okay maybe not chugging.

But if you're like me* and want to remember what wines you liked and didn't like, the app Vivino lets you do just that. You can rate and keep track of all the wines you've ever had and also check out other user's ratings of wines you might like.

*I only downloaded the app because I literally know nothing about wine but need some help realizing why I like and don't like certain ones. Clearly not a wine connoisseur.

13. Game night!!!

You really can't go wrong with this option.

Some of my favs:

Jackbox Games -- easy to play mini games that you do on your phone while looking at a tv. Get ready to laugh and be creative.

Players: 3-8

Price: ~$29.99

Ticket to Ride -- a strategy-based board game. The longer you make your railroad, the more points you get. If you played Catan you'll probably like this too.

Players: 2-5

Price: $49.49 at Target

Chess -- where are my Beth Harmon fans ✋ Chess can still be pretty likable even you're pretty bad at it. You heard it here first.

Players: 2

Price: I found one as low as $9.99 on Amazon!!

Hunt A Killer: Death At The Dive Bar Murder Mystery -- "An authentic and immersive investigation. You’ll feel like you are solving a real-life murder mystery!" You really have to be committed to solving the case or else it won't be that fun. Super satisfying when you do, though! You can find other crime related games at Target.

Players: 1+

Price: $29.99

14. Listen to my cute!🌼🍓💛💖 playlist on Spotify

Strictly feel good/feel cute songs. Lots of Lady Gaga.

15. Perfect your charcuterie board

How could I not mention eating fancy cheese on Valentine's Day? What I appreciate about charcuterie boards is that you can personalize it however you want. Mini pickles are my favorite addition.

16. Have a dip party

If charcuterie is not your thing, grab a few friends or family members and have a dip party! Everyone makes their favorite dip, whether it's s'mores flavored or buffalo chicken dip.

Here's a list of dips made by Tasty (also great for the Super Bowl).

I've never done this but I've always envied the people who are able to do this and actually make them smell good (shoutout my brother's girlfriend🤠). They're also a really lovely gift if you're looking to gift someone a candle with their favorite scents.

All you need is wax, a wick, a container, fragrance, skewers, a pot and a stove.

I hope you find at least a thing or two on this list that you want to do on your Valentine's Day!
